A 13th Century Tradition Comes to Loretto...
In medieval times markets were great events where people came together in the market square, socializing, making new acquaintances while renewing old ones, enjoying special foods and entertainment, and leaving with the things they would need between then and the next market.
Christkindlmarkt began in the German-speaking areas of Europe, the oldest recorded being in Vienna, Austria, at the end of the 13th century. Today, Christkindlmarkt is celebrated throughout much of Europe and in communities around the world with neighbors coming together to renew their bonds in a festive yet forward-looking atmosphere in anticipation of and preparation for the coming Advent and Christmas seasons.
